He said
Girl, what ‘cha doing here?
He said
Girl, pull up a chair
He said
Girl, there’s nothing to fear
I said
Boy, let me make it clear
PRE-CHORUS:
I’m not the one
So, go on now, move along
You’ve got me hypnotized
By what you do, it’s wrong
You’re makin’ moves
J-J-Just get a clue
You gotta take your time
You might just get me to
I said now
CHORUS:
I’m not here to play your games
No, I’m sincere
But you’re just a fake
Now, tell me, boy
That you’re not the same
That you just wanna take me away
I know your story
I know your lines
I’ve heard them all
A thousand times
Tell me, boy
You’re not the same
That you just wanna take me away
Boy, I hope I made it clear
I don’t need you, I’m sincere
Boy, let me tell you a line
It’s o-o-over, get out of my life
(PRE-CHORUS, CHORUS x2)
BRIDGE:
Boy, I’m not the one
Boy, just move along
No, what you do is wrong
I see you’re makin’ moves
Oh, just get a clue
I said now
(CHORUS)
I know your story
I know your lines
I’ve heard them all
At least a thousand times
Tell me, boy
You’re not the same
That you just wanna take me away
Go on, now
Take me to another place
Tonight
ABOUT THIS WORK
STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
When I write songs, I usually write the lyrics first as the melody forms in my mind. It's the natural way I've always written music.
"Take Me Away" is one of the rare songs I've written with the music first, then compiled the lyrics and melody. The instrumental is heavily influenced by 80's synth sounds, but it's one of my favorite compositions from the year.
I was 18 years old when I wrote it, living on my own for the first time in a big city away from all I ever knew. At some point, I went on a blind date with a guy I met on Craigslist (different time, I know) and ended up not being interested in the connection. He still wanted the night to continue, but I respectfully declined and wished him well... but, standing my ground made for an awkward exchange.
This song is somewhat inspired by that blind date, but mostly touches base on how "hookup culture" leads to expectations after a single evening.
It's okay to say "No" and have boundaries, although, some guys don't respect them.... but the right ones will.
