INTRO:
I need you to
Step to me, step to me, baby
Step to me, step to me, honey
Step to me, step to me, sugar
(repeat)
Yeah, alright now
If you’ve got the moves
Then you know just what to do
Ooh, make you wanna go
(Shake, shake, shake x2)
Until the screws in the roof come loose
I’m telling you
Le dije vamos a bailar
Pueden vigilar
We can move one, two, three
I’m telling you to follow me
Now, baby
PRE-CHORUS:
I know you’re looking out for me now
It looks like we’ve got the beat down
I know you’re looking out for me now
It looks like we’ve got the beat down
CHORUS:
We can dance (we can dance)
If you want to
We can shake (we can shake)
What your mama gave you
We can move (we can move)
If you’ve got the groove
Let’s go, that’s right
I’m a dancing queen
Let’s go, all night
I’m a step machine
(repeat)
I’m ready to go
The party won’t wait for us
Forever, you know
Tonight, I’m living dangerous
Come down to the edge
Where the music never ends
I got this earworm callin’ out gimme more
Let’s move this conversation down to the floor
Baby, feel me?
(PRE-CHORUS, CHORUS)
BRIDGE:
¡Vamos ¡Vamos
No sé lo que has oído
But let me tell you what I do know
Yeah, sé que el ritmo y el compás
I want this night to last
Oye, mi amor
(CHORUS)
Let’s go, that’s right
I’m a dancing queen
Let’s go, all night
I’m a step machine
ABOUT THIS WORK
STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
I have always loved dancing. I'm not flawless with it, but it's often been an outlet for me to release my creativity or unwind from stress.
Growing up, I used to watch different dance tutorial videos and learned all the moves to some of the most popular music videos on TV (e.g. Thriller by Michael Jackson, etc.).
As a teenager, I became close with friends whose Puerto Rican families were fluent in Spanish and loved dancing. I was immersed in their culture, developing a deep respect for the way they experience and love life. I learned so much about music, arts, and of course, dance.
My friends often participated in different dance groups (bachata, etc), and later, taught dance classes to local youth. We spent many nights dancing in the club or at parties. It was so much fun, and many times, we just danced the night away!
"Step Machine" is a representation of that time in my life, where I found so much happiness in dance and really learned to love life unconditionally.
It was very important to me to write a bilingual song that I felt expressed the art of dancing, as if we were in a club or at a house party.
In addition to my own experiences, I was inspired by the You Got Served (2004) movie, which was a huge hit at the time, and thought about some of the dance-off scenes while I was writing this song.
Hey! I'm Ammie-Marie.
