VERSE 1:
Chit chat, batter up
You’ve always got something to say
When it comes to naming names
You’ve always got a game to play
VERSE 2:
Lips tight, head down
Politically correct
Can’t witness what you don’t see
So you bow your head instead
PRE-CHORUS:
It’s a shame, shame
Baby girl, why do you do what you do?
It’s the same, the same
Running your mouth off like a fool
CHORUS:
Oh, whoa, whoa
You’re in the big leagues now
Counting dollars, breaking bottles
Getting caught up on a white line
Oh, whoa, whoa
You’ve got a big mouth now
Talk about her, Aristotle
Just a taste up off the grapevine
Yeah
What you say, what you do
Goes around, falls back onto you
Oh, whoa, whoa
What you know, what you see
Goes around, it’s no mystery
Oh, whoa, whoa
You’re in the big leagues now
Counting dollars, breaking bottles
Taking hits up off the white line
VERSE 3:
Shots fired, hands up
You’re a wanted man
How does it feel, the tables turned
Tell me, baby what’s the plan
VERSE 4:
Click clack, the cuffs are on
Your freedom is adrift
No judge, no jury, guilty
By the color of your skin
(PRE-CHORUS, CHORUS)
BRIDGE:
It’s a shame, shame
Oh, whoa
Why do they do what they do?
You’re in chains, chains now
For running your mouth off like a fool
(CHORUS)
OUTRO:
Raise your nose, clutch your bag
They’re no better than you
ABOUT THIS WORK
I wrote this song in the midst of so much civil unrest at the beginning of what would become Trumpism in America. For the first time in human history, a spotlight was being shined on the dark underbelly of the nation, rotten with prejudice.
At the same time, I was dealing with relentless emotional and psychological warfare in the workplace, which was significantly impacting my mental health. The abuse was happening on a daily basis from toxic leadership, which caused a number of colleagues to quit throughout the course of the year.
This song ultimately became a mashup of both concepts, playing into some of the worst behaviors and treatment towards each other in modern society.
Being in the "big leagues" means being in a position where you are no longer in control of yourself or your destiny, and others are making decisions for you.
Whether it's bullying in the workplace or having your human rights violated, whenever humans lose the power to speak for themselves, freedom has been relinquished.
But, what if the roles could be reversed? What if your boss was in your shoes? What if white people were treated the way black people are? Because what goes around, comes around...
Hey! I'm Ammie-Marie.
